Quality makes history

Since its foundation over 275 years ago in the heart of Europe, Villeroy & Boch has become one of the world's leading brands in the sanitary sector and looks back on a long tradition in which the company played an active part in shaping bathroom culture. A lot has changed since the company was founded. The long and successful company history is a sign that the company and the Villeroy & Boch brand have been successfully developed to meet the changing customer requirements.

Villeroy & Boch

Villeroy & Boch has been shaped over nine generations by the dedication and innovative spirit of the founder families.  Competitors become allies. In 1748, François Boch, together with his three sons, started manufacturing ceramic crockery and accessories. In 1836, Jean-François Boch merged with the successful stoneware producer, Nicolas Villeroy, to form the Villeroy & Boch company. This merger created one of the first global corporations of the 19th century.

Thirty years later, Villeroy & Boch founded the mosaic factory and thus entered the building trade. The future global demand for our tiles was to be covered from Mettlach. These tiles now decorate listed buildings such as Cologne cathedral und the Holland Tunnel in New York City. Floor tiles from this factory were also part of the grand and elegant interior fittings of the famous RMS Titanic.

Quality makes history

When running water was introduced in the 19th century, Villeroy & Boch started the serial production of sanitary ceramics and contributed towards bringing bathroom culture and hygiene to the wider market throughout Europe. The company was able to transform the bathroom into a feel-good oasis thanks to Luigi Colani’s pioneering product concept in 1975. The bathroom was no longer regarded as just a place for personal grooming, instead it gained the same status as all other living areas and became an expression of personal taste. The bathroom has become a personal retreat for many people where they can relax and unwind.

Villeroy & Boch today primarily stands for clever combinations of functionality, comfort and design. By constantly striving for better products and with a keen eye for opportunities and challenges, Villeroy & Boch manages to deliver new ideas to customers time and time again while impressing them them with unique collections. Hardly surprising that numerous collections and products from Villeroy & Boch have been awarded design prizes.
